History of the Hermitage:
The Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, along with the Moscow Kremlin, hosted perhaps the most significant events in Russian history.
The hermitage complex is as large in size as on a historic scale. There are countless writings about this palace, but almost all of its chambers are worth a separate research work.
Construction of the Hermitage:
In the history of St. Petersburg, there were five winter palaces, the Hermitage is the last. Its construction took place from 1754 to 1762 and began at the time of Empress Elizaveta Petrovna.
Unfortunately, she did not live until the completion of the works, the inauguration and set was supposed to be with the reign of Peter III, but he was deposed from the throne in the summer of 1762.
The final touches in the decoration of the Palace were made under the reign of Catherine II.
Events that marked the Hermitage:
As for the large-scale historical events that took place within the castle walls, in less than 300 years there were a large number.
In 1837, the most famous fire in the entire history of the Russian Empire occurred at the Winter Palace. They were unable to cope with the fire for three days. During this time, 13 people died.
The decoration of the Palace, saved from the fire, was kept in the Alexander column (The meeting point of our Hermitage tour), but it was not possible to save all the treasures that were there.
The chronicles of the period of the Decembrist uprising, the Russian-Turkish wars and other events were lost forever.
Furthermore, many works of art were also burned and the Romanovs returned to the Palace only in the fall of 1839.
Another event that marked the history of the palace was the terrorist act of the year 1880 at the hands of an individual (carpenter) from the town of Khalturin whose purpose was to kill Emperor Alexander II (although he was saved).
After the 30kg device exploded, 11 guardsmen died and another 56 were wounded. All the dead were participants in the recent Russian-Turkish war.
In 1904, Nicholas II moved his permanent residence to the Alexander Palace.
In January, 1905, near the Hermitage Palace, one of the most tragic events of the 20th century took place; the shooting of a peaceful manifestation. This event was the catalyst for the first Russian revolution.
The Hermitage after the 1917 revolution:
After the 1917 revolution and the fall of the Romanovs, the Palace housed a Provisional government.
After the power of the Soviets prevailed in Saint Petersburg, the Winter received the status of state museums. Since then, until today it remains such except during the Great Patriotic War when it closed.
